Speaker Bio: Rachael graduated from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in 2015 and began her career as a pathologists’ assistant at The Cleveland Clinic. A few years later, Rachael moved to Washington, DC and began working at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital where she supervises the surgical pathology and autopsy services. Rachael thinks that the most rewarding part of her job is teaching others to deliver quality care from the grossing bench.
Session Description: A whipple specimen is one of the most complex specimens that comes through the surgical pathology laboratory. This lecture will discuss common pathologies seen in whipple resections including pancreatic adenocarcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and ampullary carcinoma. After orienting the specimen, dissection techniques are used to assess the pathology and determine the tumor stage based on AJCC guidelines. Many pathologists’ assistants are not only required to process these complex specimens, but also teach others in the lab how to proficiently process whipple specimens. This lecture will serve as a resource for those conversations.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Elizabeth Thompson received her MD and PhD from the University of Virginia and then came to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for residency training in anatomic pathology. She joined the faculty in 2016 as a general surgical pathologist with a specialty in pancreatic pathology and directs the clinical pancreatic pathology service, where they see over 400 pancreatic resections a year.
Session Description: The changing clinical landscape in pancreatic neoplasms, from increasing rates of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation to more frequent resection of cystic lesions, presents a myriad of grossing and diagnostic challenges in the pancreas. In this lecture, we will explore how the clinical history impacts grossing strategy and how the gross examination is critical both to accurate diagnosis and tumor staging.
