Member News

Dear AAPA Fellow Members,

We have made significant progress on the 3rd Edition of the AAPA Macroscopic Examination Guidelines: Utilization of the CAP Cancer Protocols at the Surgical Bench (Grossing Guidelines), but there is still a need for new authors for the last protocols.

Protocols available to write include:

  • GI
  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma
  • Perihilar Bile Ducts
  • Hematologic
  • Bone Marrow
  • Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Plasma Cell Neoplasms
  • Ophthalmic
  • Uveal Melanoma
  • Pediatric
  • Extragonadal Germ Cell Tumor
  • Ewing Sarcoma
  • Rhabdomyosarcoma
  • Soft Tissue

The following is a summary of the modifications to the 3rd Edition Grossing Guidelines (view a sample protocol here):

  • Structured data elements utilizing the CAP Cancer Case Summary macroscopic elements
  • Recommended block allocation key
  • Specimen handling / dissection guidelines with illustrations or photographs demonstrating the handling steps to adequately process the specimen
  • Educational / background information including incidence, epidemiology, morbidity / mortality, clinical presentation, imaging considerations, pertinent anatomy, macroscopic features of tumor, treatment / therapy guidelines, prognosis and prognostic features, and metastatic sites.

The Grossing Guidelines also incorporate appendix sections in an organized format and include:

  • TNM criteria tables
  • Ancillary testing information
  • Frozen section considerations
  • Narrative macroscopic descriptions

Benefits to authors include:

  • Disease site “expert status”
  • Peer-reviewed publication; boost your CV
  • Earned CE credits for authoring after publication
  • An excellent way to collaborate and get involved with your organization!

If you have an interest in writing any of the listed Grossing Guideline protocols, please contact Project Manager, Connie Thorpe at [email protected].

Thank you!
