Abstract: Pathologists’ assistants in forensics are becoming more prevalent. New positions in medical examiner or coroner offices are being approved with increasing frequency. At the same time, hospital-based PAs are seeing an increase in overflow medical examiner forensic autopsies contracted to the hospital autopsy service. This session will be the first of a series of forensic-based webinars focusing on forensic knowledge that can benefit all practicing PAs. In this session, Juniper Fedor, MS, PA(ASCP), D-ABMDI, will present forensic pathology and medicolegal death investigation basics and terminology, including legal considerations, the differences between forensic and clinical autopsy, different facets of the medical examiner and coroner office, as well as other essential forensic-based knowledge.
Instruction Level: Basic – Entry level; no prior knowledge of subject necessary
Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Understand forensic pathology and medicolegal death investigation basics and terminology.
- Identify the differences between forensic and clinical autopsy.
- Describe different facets of the medical examiner and coroner office.
