Robert H. Young, MD, FRCPATH Robert H. Young, MD, FRCPATH is a Pathologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Robert E. Scully Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. After initial training in Ireland, Dr. Young did a residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the late 1970s and then joined the faculty in 1980. His first subspecialty interest was gynecologic pathology in which he did a fellowship with the late Dr. Robert E. Scully. However, soon Dr. Young was asked also to take a special interest urologic pathology and since circa 1982 has been active in both areas both at the hospital and by contributions to the literature. Dr. Young has published over 300 peer reviewed articles in the literature and about 100 reviews and chapters in books. He additionally has coauthored three of the well known works in the Fascicle series, the third series, on ovary, testis, and prostate and related structures. He is coauthor of a well known text on gynecologic pathology. Dr. Young’s interest in gynecologic and urologic pathology are broad, but focus largely on the subclassification of unusual tumors of those systems with an additional special interest in the many benign proliferations that may be misinterpreted as malignancy. Although he acknowledges new techniques, particularly immunohistochemistry, can be helpful on occasion, in the great majority of cases the correct interpretation depends on a solid knowledge of routine gross and microscopic features sometimes aided by the clinical background. Dr. Young has lectured throughout the world and is very active as a director of a number of Harvard Medical School postgraduate courses in Pathology. |
