PAs Promoting the Profession: Steve Suvalsky

Steve Suvalsky, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM
AAPA member since 1983

Steve Suvalsky has been given many opportunities to share the PA profession in so many ways over the years. Since 1983, he has been fortunate to mentor high school students, laboratory students, college students, medical students, veterinary students, and residents. Because his co-workers and pathologists recognize the importance for sharing various lab professions, Steve welcomes students during his daily workload on the surgical bench, performance of autopsies, and attendance at various CPC and tumor board conferences.

Recently he took his “containers of stuff” with aprons and gloves to the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science State of Iowa CME Conference where he shared “What You Test is What I See!” in his home town of Des Moines, Iowa. Of the three lectures going on simultaneously to his, almost 60 of 105 conference attendees were present for his hands-on demonstration, and they saw and held both normal and disease specimens. Many attendees didn’t even realize that PAs worked in their labs or that anatomic pathology existed in the Lab.

Steve has retained the formalin-fixed “education” collection for such opportunities. It is a terrific way to share the scope of practice of Pathologists’ Assistants, present a career that few know about, and also provide public relations for the lab he works at and the professionals with whom he works. Steve has been able to share the same in his lab’s autopsy room for PA Day and Laboratory week. Every PA can do this if they like sharing and teaching; Steve would be happy to assist you!

Are you a PA promoting the profession? Do you present at conferences to spread the word about PAs? Offer job shadowing opportunities? Educate students on what it takes to become a pathologists’ assistant? We want to share your story! Send us a summary describing how you promote the PA profession and one or two high-resolution photos, and you may be our next featured member!
