In 2016, New York created a licensure category for Pathologists’ Assistants, including a two-year grandfathering period for experienced practitioners to become licensed through physician attestation. Since 2018, all new applicants must meet formal educational and examination standards to qualify for licensure.

Requirements
- Successfully complete a bachelor’s or higher degree in a pathologists’ assistant program registered by the Department, or the substantial equivalent as determined by the Department, OR
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a NAACLS-accredited pathologists’ assistant program
AND
- Obtain a passing score on the Pathologists’ Assistant certification exam from the ASCP Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC)
