California does not require licensure or certification for pathologists’ assistants but defines supervision levels for grossing personnel. Regulations distinguish between “processing” (non-dissected specimens) and “grossing” (dissected specimens), establishing a tiered supervision system for certified and non-certified staff.

Non-Certified Grossing Personnel

  • A qualified pathologist shall be physically present onsite and available for consultation and direction during dissection
  • May process specimens that do not require dissection under indirect supervision by a pathologist, accessible via phone or electronic means.

Certified Grossing Personnel

  • Do not require a pathologist’s presence
