Cutting the Wait: How Digital Pathology is Changing Frozen Sections

Abstract:

Timely and precise intraoperative diagnosis through frozen section analysis plays a pivotal role in guiding surgical decisions. Conventional workflows depend on preparing glass slides and requiring on-site evaluation by a pathologist, often leading to delays caused by physical slide transport and limited pathologist availability. Digital pathology platforms aim to modernize this process by enabling remote, real-time consultations.

This webinar will investigate the influence of digital slide scanning and telepathology on the frozen section processes in a busy pathology lab: University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). Following this presentation, we will be joined by panelists from the New and Emerging Technologies Special Interest Group to discuss and compare traditional workflows with digital workflows, describethe strengths & weaknesses of both, and propose solutions PAs can employ in their pathology labs to improve turnaround time and pathology staff job satisfaction.

Presenters:

Ashley Illingworth, MS, D.H.Sc – Pathologists’ Assistant; University of Mississippi Medical Center

Aaron Wallace, MHS PA (ASCP)– Pathologists’ Assistant, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital

Joshua Griffith, Vice President and General Manager, Grundium US

Learning Objectives

1. Identify challenges for frozen section processes that can be addressed through digital pathology and telepathology.

2. Discuss solutions to expedite and/or improve frozen section workflows.

3. Describe how to modify frozen section workflows to address the scarcity of qualified pathology resources
