The American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) is pleased to announce the release of the updated and expanded Pathologists’ Assistant Scope of Practice reflecting a more contemporary practice of the Pathologists’ Assistant. In late 2017, the AAPA formed a task force to address the revision of the current Pathologists’ Assistant Scope of Practice. This task force included a diverse group of Pathologists’ Assistants representing academia, the community hospital, the private laboratory, management, former American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) examination committee members, and an academic pathologist.
After careful review of the current Pathologists’ Assistant Scope of Practice, review of the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification Pathologists’ Assistant task analysis, and research of trends in the utilization of the Pathologists’ Assistant, a revised Scope of Practice was created.
This Scope of Practice was disseminated to the Association of Pathologists’ Assistant Training Program Directors (APATP) and the AAPA membership for review and comment with approximately 100 membership responses.
This contemporary Scope of Practice includes an expanded definition of the Pathologists’ Assistant, Education and certification updates, and expanded surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, and laboratory operations sections. This document comprehensively reflects the progression of responsibility and contemporary practice of the Pathologists’ Assistant and reflects the AAPA’s core values of quality patient care, education, advocacy, and collaboration.
