Speaker Bio: Dr. Winslow is the Regional Director of HPB Surgery and a Professor of Surgery at Medstar Georgetown University in Washington DC. Her training includes fellowships in both HPB surgery and abdominal transplant surgery, as well as a Masters in clinical investigation. Her research interests include study of radiographic-pathologic correlation and its impact on clinical surgery. Her belief is that true multidisciplinary clinical care of patients with HPB diseases is essential to forward progress, and her clinical and research efforts have focused on bridging these divides.

Session Description: This lecture will focus on the clinical relevance of radiographic-pathologic correlation as it pertains to patients with disease of the liver, pancreas, and biliary tree. Examples will be drawn from patients undergoing liver resection for metastatic colorectal cancer and pancreatic resections for cysts and cancers. Discussion will focus on the essential role of the pathology team in the multidisciplinary care of patients and the importance of integration of imaging modalities in the future.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Drachenberg is a professor of pathology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Director of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory. Since 1992, she has been the main renal and pancreas transplant pathologist at the University of Maryland transplant program. Her main areas of clinical and research interest are pancreas allograft pathology and polyomavirus allograft nephropathy. She has led the Banff transplant group that developed the currently used grading schema for allograft rejection in pancreas.

Session Description: Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects millions of people worldwide. This disease leads to serious complications including cardiovascular disease, blindness, and peripheral vascular disease leading to lower limb amputations. In addition, some patients with DM have very labile glucose metabolism with episodes of hypoglycemia alternating with hyperglycemia. Patients with severe hypoglycemia become comatose and can die, often without any warning. Pancreas transplantation helps with all aspects of DM and markedly improves the quality of life.

This lecture will make the audience familiar with the main aspects of pancreas transplantation and the importance of gross and microscopic evaluation of the organ when there is graft dysfunction.
