Hello AAPA Members,
The Education Committee has devoted a great deal of time and energy into developing the Preceptor Program. Now, we need your help reviewing before we release this summer!
Who: Ideally members who have experience teaching through training residents and/or PA students.
When: May – June 2022
What is the Preceptor Program? The Preceptor Program is a new education initiative aimed at one of the main roles of Pathologists’ Assistants – teaching. It covers topics from providing meaningful feedback to teaching grossing using different learning styles to preventing educator burnout. Each lesson will be based upon the latest scientific, psychological, and educational research and will feature examples directly applicable to teaching in a gross lab.
To be successful, this project will need a wide variety of volunteers – the wisdom of a PA who has been teaching residents for 20 years is invaluable, as is the perspective of a student or new grad navigating both sides of the learner/teacher relationship.
The program is divided into five sections:
- Overview led by Alexis Snyder, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM – terminology, background information, ensuring that PAs have a good knowledge base to become excellent clinical preceptors and teachers
- Intro Month led by Kaysi Lyall, MS, PA(ASCP)CM – how to make the first month for PA students and residents less daunting and more successful
- Learning Theories led by Christina Narakorn, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM – exploring different learning and teaching styles to find the right one for each situation
- Behavioral led by Kerwin Kolheffer, MS, PA(ASCP)CM, and Kristine McCluskey, EdD, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM – ensuring successful communication and feedback
- Interprofessional led by Kathy Brown, MS, PA(ASCP)CM – teaching other medical professionals and teaching outside the lab
Whether you lecture residents, precept for a Pathologists’ Assistant program, train new hires, guide accessioners and surgical pathology techs, collaborate with OR staff on patient initiatives, or simply repeatedly explain what exactly you do to curious family and friends, we are all educators in some way. However, many of us have found that the skills and knowledge to educate are largely learned on the job, creating a disadvantage for students entering the field and often placing PAs in uncomfortable and weak positions. This is our chance to create a resource that further develops us as professionals and gives us the tools necessary to succeed in one of our main roles. Please consider joining the team! If you are interested in joining the focus group or if you have any questions, please contact [email protected].
Thank you in advance for helping make the Preceptor Program a success!
Sincerely, Kristine McCluskey, EdD, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM AAPA Preceptor Program Subcommittee Chair
