AAPA Ballot Results – BOT & International Vote

Member News

Dear AAPA Members,

This year’s ballot for the 2021 Board of Trustees election and the proposed international membership category did finally reach a quorum! Voting was open September 1 and extended through October 15. Thank you to all our members who voted and made your voice heard!

Congratulations to our newly elected BOT members, Courtney Hyland and Jesse McCoy, and returning BOT member Beth Obertino-Norwood! Their 3-year term begins on January 1, 2021. A heartfelt thank you and best wishes to BOT members with terms ending on December 31 of this year, Lindsay McCarley and Dennis Strenk.

This ballot also passed the addition of a new AAPA membership category! International pathologists’ assistant equivalents who live outside the U.S., have been actively practicing as a pathologists’ assistant, have the educational equivalent to an ASCP certified PA in the United States (or higher), and have not graduated from a NAACLS accredited pathologists’ assistant training program will have the ability to join. Canadian PAs certified by the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists’ Assistants will also have the opportunity to join.

Pathologists’ assistants who live outside the U.S., graduated from a NAACLS accredited training program, and passed the ASCP BOC Exam still qualify for full Fellow membership with all the same rights and privileges they’ve always had – nothing has changed there.

Adding this international membership category will allow the AAPA to share our CE globally to those who would otherwise not have access, as well as provide them with limited membership benefits. It does not provide them with a form of credential. Having a contingent of international members will strengthen the AAPA’s voice as the gold standard for the PA profession around the world.

We look forward to phasing in our new board members and our new international membership category over the next couple of months!

Sincerely,

Michelle Sok, CAE
AAPA Executive Director
