Please tell the AAPA membership about yourself, and describe your past volunteer work. I have been a Fellow member since graduating in 2011. I had a brief stint in southern California before taking my current position at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I’ve been a volunteer in some form or another for the past 20+ years, working with youth and adult organizations in our local communities, and more relevantly as a part of the Membership Committee within the AAPA for the last few years. One of the greatest things I’ve learned is that an entity will typically get out of it what the members put into it. We have a dynamic and enthusiastic membership that loves an opportunity to tell people about what we do, and I’d love to try and tap more into the overall potential that our members bring.
Why are you interested in serving on the AAPA BOT? I’m interested in serving on the BOT in hopes that I can be a part of furthering the aims of our organization and profession. Our members are incredibly talented and driven, and I’m interested in connecting with them to know what the most pressing needs and concerns are and how we can address them. Our organization has come a long way advocating for greater involvement and presence within the healthcare field, and I believe there is a lot of energy right now to continue making the same kind of progress.
What do you think should be the most important priority for AAPA? Quite simply put, advocacy. The ultimate goal of providing patients and pathologists alike with the services our expertise affords is supported by the AAPA’s efforts to extend our reach, our sphere of influence, and our capacity to make a difference. The AAPA is meant to be the premier platform and voice for pathologists’ assistants, and that is done by creating inroads wherever possible to showcase our capabilities.
What is your understanding of the mission and vision of this organization? The AAPA always has been, and always will be, about advocacy for the pathologists’ assistants profession within the framework of our efforts to provide unparalleled patient care and comprehensive collaboration to the pathologists with whom we work. We look to utilize the skills, knowledge, and acumen of our members to tailor the scope and reach of our practice to whatever the needs of the individual practices we serve in. Through our community, we support one another to find solutions to simple and complex issues facing our field.
Is there a particular area that you feel could be improved within AAPA? Pathologists’ assistants within the AAPA, both general members and volunteers, have already done a lot to further our profession over the previous several decades by performing quality work and creating great relationships with individuals and organizations. While I don’t pretend to have any greater capacity than any other PA, I hope to bring my energy and commitment to an already diligent group of dedicated individuals to ultimately broaden our reach, where feasible. I believe the members of our community have profound talent and insight to offer in that endeavor, and hopefully utilizing all of us as a resource is something for which we can continue to strive.
What is the biggest challenge your lab faces today? The landscape of healthcare is constantly changing or threatening to change. Concerns over declines in reimbursement, shortages within the laboratory workforce, hospital/organizational mergers, organizational support, workload volume, and PA utilization are just a few of the issues facing our members today. Fortunately, the AAPA provides a great framework and venue from which to work through some of these issues while continually striving to enhance its delivery of additional support and benefits.
Would you like to see Daniel join the AAPA Board of Trustees? Make sure to cast your vote in the BOT Election, opening August 1, 2019!
