As a member association of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), the AAPA is notified of current trends and changes related to cancer staging.  The following information represents a notification that AJCC has invited us to share with all AAPA members:

Our colleagues at the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FIGO) have developed new staging rules for ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancers. You will notice that some of the changes apply to the work we perform at the surgical gross bench.  The rules were published in 2014, in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

As you know, both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Cancer Protocols and AJCC Cancer Staging Manual incorporate the FIGO staging rules in their publications.  The staging rules in the article are very recent – not yet part of CAP or AJCC documents. Consequently, while the FIGO rules are not required for compliance with current CAP Cancer Protocols or incorporated into the current AJCC Staging Manual, they will, in all likelihood, become a part of the next renditions of these documents.  Thus, the article (accessible by clicking here) is provided to keep you abreast of coming change and give you the opportunity to become familiar with that change prior to its incorporation into the above referenced cancer reporting systems.

Kindest regards,
