Speaker Spotlight

Carolyn M. Salafia, MD

Dr. Carolyn Salafia, head of the Placental Modulation Laboratory at NYS Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities, maintains a clinical diagnostic service at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Dr Salafia has over 120 peer-reviewed publications in the field of placental pathology. Most recently, she has assembled a multidisciplinary team that has developed novel, sensitive and reproducible placental measurements at both the gross and histologic level. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Pediatric Pathology and is one of a small handful of pathologists who specialize in reproductive pathology. Dr. Salafia has recently been awarded a POR (Patient Oriented Research) Scholarship to the Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, Department of Defense Innovative Idea and Pilot Awards in autism research as well as NIH research funding and small business innovative research grants. She is particularly proud of having taught for many years in the Quinnipiac College Pathologists’ Assistant Masters Program under Leo Kelly and Dr. Nelson Gelfman. Her recent research advances in understanding what the gross placenta can tell us about the newborn, child and adult will be of especial interest to this group, at what she calls the “front line” of the study of gestational life.

Lectures Scheduled:

  • Gross Examination of the Placenta: The Entree to the “Iceberg” of Clinical Gestational Pathology
