Workshops offered at the 2015 Fall Continuing Education Conference:
A Guide to the Autopsy for Pediatric Heart Disease
Monday, 8/31, 2:15-5:15 pm This workshop will review the principles and guidelines for the autopsy in pediatric cardiac disease cases. The focus will be on congenital heart disease. Attendees can apply the principles of a systematic approach to analysis of specimens with congenital heart disease by attending Thursday’s workshop: Hands-On Examination of Congenital Heart Disease Specimens & the Surgical Repair.
Cardiac Anatomy and Surgical Pathology
Monday, 8/31, 2:30-5:30 pm This case-based workshop will review cardiac anatomy, its significance, and discuss common congenital anomalies. Discussions will include the need for sections, the type of sections and, if possible, the types of stains needed. The aim is to demonstrate the need to decide the type of device and the need for a complete report, not just one which says, “failed valve.”
Hands-On Examination of Congenital Heart Disease Specimens & the Surgical Repair
Thursday, 9/3, 2-5 pm This hands-on workshop will be a detailed sequential segmental examination of various types of congenital heart disease as well as the surgical repair. A short lecture is included at the start of the workshop.
