Aortic Root and Aortic Valve:
Normal Anatomy and Abnormalities

Presented by: Diane Spicer, PA(ASCP)CM, University of Florida

Join our very own Diane Spicer, PA(ASCP)CM, for an interactive and informative workshop!
Attending the workshop will earn you an additional two CE credits.

In this review of cardiac anatomy, basic embryologic concepts will be introduced along with an extensive examination of aortic root anatomy. The aortic root will be approached in a tripartite fashion, examining the structures supporting the root at the roof of the left ventricle, the valvar complex itself, and finally, the intrapericardial portion of the aorta. Variations in the support of the aortic valve will be discussed along with subvalvar lesions. The membranous septum and the anatomy of the aortic root with relationship to the conduction system also deserve mention. Emphasis will be placed on the morphology of stenotic valves and how the dimensions and presence of the interleaflet triangles permit accurate distinction of bicuspid and unicuspid variants. These lesions can be found incidentally at autopsy or in explanted hearts at the surgical bench. (Read More…)
