Please tell us about yourself, and describe your past volunteer work.
I became an AAPA member in 2003.  In 2006, I volunteered for the Newsletter Committee, writing articles for the AAPA Newsletter.  I took over as chair of the committee in 2008 and continued in that role until joining the Board of Trustees in 2018.  During that time, we expanded the AAPA Newsletter to a full color, peer reviewed journal, The Cutting Edge.  I have also been involved with the AAPA Grossing Guidelines as the Publishing Editor, and I serve as a peer reviewer for the Publications Committee.

Why are you interested in serving on the AAPA BOT?
Over the course of my first term, we have accomplished much, but there is still more to do.  Advocating for PAs is important not only in this country, but globally as well.  I feel I have something to contribute in this area.  We have made a concerted effort to collaborate with other organizations, and this is just beginning to show results.  I would like to continue helping to pursue these areas.

What do you think should be the most important priority for AAPA?
Recognition and respect for our field are important, but all of that is summed up in one thing: Advocacy.  We must continue to get the word out about the work that we do and the patients that we serve.  In recent years, we have seen greater recognition on social media, publications, and other online formats.  But this is just the beginning if we truly want to be respected for our importance.

What is your understanding of the mission and vision of this organization?
The AAPA represents and advocates for pathologists’ assistants in the greater medical community and the general public.  We also support continuing education for our members through our conferences and print publications.

Is there a particular area that you feel could be improved within AAPA?
I think we are doing a good job in most areas.  Our committees and their volunteers do a fantastic job.  I am continually impressed by their work.  Our student members have many great ideas as well, which shows great promise for our future.  The people with whom I have served on the board have been inspiring, and I enjoy working with them.  We need to build on the progress we have made.

What is the biggest challenge your lab faces today?
Staff shortages.  Not enough people are pursuing careers in the lab.
