Location: Houston, Texas
Fellow Member Since: 2002
Current AAPA Position: Preceptor Program Subcommittee Chair
Please tell the AAPA membership about yourself, and describe your past volunteer work.
I am a certified PA, social scientist (organizational psychology in medicine), safety officer, and functioned as an academic and lead PA for 15 years having advanced to an associate professor level. While as a fellow of the AAPA, I briefly volunteered for the PR (now Marketing/Communications) committee and Special Interest Group for teaching responsibilities. I also peer review for journal and grant submissions. I currently serve as the educational subcommittee’s chair for the Preceptor Program.
Why are you interested in serving on the AAPA BOT?
During my time as a volunteer in other AAPA committees, I have been committed to upholding the organization’s mission. I can further contribute much expertise and skill and collaborate well with other PAs in a leadership capacity with like-minded goals.
What is your understanding of the mission and vision of this organization?
The mission and vision of our organization is to support the advancement of PAs through a network which can provide continual education, leadership opportunities, and further professional development.
What do you think should be the most important priority for AAPA?
Advocacy with education.
Is there a particular area that you feel could be improved within AAPA?
Leadership development.
What is the biggest challenge your lab faces today?
PA retention based upon poor leadership functioning under the status quo, a lack of respect for our profession, and disconnection from the pathologists.
