Are you looking for a way to help your professional association grow and evolve? Apply to serve on the AAPA Board of Trustees (BOT) by March 31! There are three seats available for the upcoming 2021-2023 term. The election will be held in September 2020, and winners will be announced in October 2020. Elected individuals will officially join the board in January 2021.
Below, new BOT member Derek Deutsch, MPH, MS, PA(ASCP)CM, shares how serving on the board helps members develop a deeper understanding of the organization, in turn furthering our ability to strengthen the profession.
“The AAPA is unique because it exists to provide exceptional comprehensive professional support specifically for pathologists’ assistants.
My understanding of the organization’s importance and the benefits of membership started while I was a first-year student at Rosalind Franklin. Then, attending Fall Conference as a Fellow member motivated me to learn more about how [the event] was accomplished. I met many AAPA colleagues and was impressed by the interaction of many dedicated volunteers committed to protecting and promoting the profession. I wanted to contribute my time, skills, and knowledge as well, so I began volunteering for the Membership committee and Survey subcommittee. Joining the BOT and working with the Education committee further widened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the intricate inner workings and the collaboration needed to provide professional development and elevate our profession. No other organization provides this level of support for pathologists’ assistants.
I enjoy feedback and seeing members’ responses to surveys and questionnaires. I appreciate the insights, new ideas, and opportunities to make improvements. Communication and participation from AAPA members are both vital to steer efforts on how to best provide for our members, anticipate needs, and achieve collective goals.
I know that there are many passionate colleagues with abilities, talents, and thoughtful ideas. The AAPA is OUR organization. The AAPA offers opportunities for members to grow, contribute, and engage with their peers. As a smaller community, it is possible to work together and make sustainable and significant contributions within our organization and within the medical profession. I’ve really enjoyed my experience as a volunteer and I encourage and hope to inspire others to do the same.”
