The Cutting Edge, 2021 Issue 1

Dear AAPA Members,

We are pleased to bring you the new year’s first issue of THE CUTTING EDGE. In this issue, we have three peer-reviewed articles, as well as an overview of continuing education certification maintenance, a student committee update, a recap of last fall’s town hall on the state of the association, and information on PA Day, coming up on April 14th.

Congratulations to our two AAPA 2020 award recipients: Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mike Sovocool and Board of Trustees Award winner Meghan Pickard! Thank you both for your commitment and dedication to our association! Read more about Mike and Meghan’s achievements and contributions to the AAPA on page 22.

The cover manuscript, an advanced pathology CE, is about a patient with three primary cancers, written by the 2020 student delegate winner, Jessie O’Donnell. The second manuscript is a general pathology CE by one of our 2020 fellow travel grant winners, Drew Sciacca, regarding a cloacal defect in a fetal autopsy. The third peer-reviewed article, written by fellow member Alysha Martini, features an autopsy on a 32-year-old with metastatic gastric cancer.

You can also find updates on upcoming meetings, including the Virtual Spring Meeting, March 20th-21st, which is only a couple weeks away – register now (early registration pricing ends Friday, March 5th).

A year has now passed since we were first affected by COVID-19, and our jobs and this association have seen quite the upheaval. I am grateful we have been able to provide CE content here as well as online with virtual meetings and eBlasts. The AAPA website’s COVID-related updates have been a helpful resource at my job, and I encourage others to continue to use this source of helpful information.

You can access the online, interactive version of this issue now by clicking on the journal cover image found here or by visiting the “The Cutting Edge journal” page found under the Member Community area of www.pathassist.org.

If you have opted to receive the journal via postal mail, a copy of your journal is on its way to your mailbox. You can change your preferred delivery method by accessing your member profile.

Stay safe everyone!

Sincerely,

Beth Felicelli, PA(ASCP)CM
Editor-in-Chief of The Cutting Edge
